“Your Name.” Creator Announces New Movie

Grab your tissues- Makoto Shinkai, director of Your Name. and Weathering With You announced on December 15th, 2021 that he will be working on a new movie that will open in Japan in 2022.

Suzume no Tojimari (translated into “Suzume’s Door-Locking”) was announced at a press conference with several familiar faces at the release. Hosted by voice actors Mone Kamishiraishi (Mitsusha in your name.) and Nana Mori (Hina in Weathering With You), the team boasts several powerhouses that Makoto Shinkai has worked with in the past. Including Masayoshi Tanaka as the character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as the animation director, and Takumi Tanji as the art director, this is bound to be another masterpiece with Shinkai leading the lead as director, screenplay writer, original story creator. All names listed have worked closely together with Shinkai in the past.

Described as a Japanese road trip movie, the main character Suzume lives in a sleepy town and opens a door within mountain ruins. This door holds dangerous disasters that activate several other doors to open. Suzume, with the help of a young man, travels around Japan to close the doors to keep the disasters at bay.

In the press release, Shinkai described this as a coming of age story, a movie about liberation and growth, and a piece about tying up loose ends. It’s definitely going to make all of us cry in the theaters!

With the history of success that Makoto Shinkai has with his films, this is bound to be another box office success. Suzume no Tojimari will be released in the Fall of 2022.
