Ti West’s ‘X’ Prequel Pearl Sees Mia Goth Return In Bloody Fashion

A24 invites you to discover an “X-tradordinary” story.

Ti West returned to the horror genre this March with the release of the A24 slasher film, X. A film which was met with praise from both critics and fans alike. Check out our review here. Even before X landed in cinemas, it was revealed that a prequel story called Pearl had already been shot and today we got our first look at the film with the release of the first trailer, which you can watch below.

A synopsis for Pearl reads:

Filmmaker Ti West returns with another chapter from the twisted world of X, in this astonishing follow-up to the year’s most acclaimed horror film. Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she’s seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide, in the stunning, technicolor-inspired origin story of X’s iconic villain.

Mia Goth reprises her role as X’s villain Pearl in the prequel which takes place decades prior to the events of X.

The trailer begins with us returning to the farmhouse from X, where a young Pearl is helping her family. It then descends into her search for fame and fortune… and bloodshed, as the trailer reveals Pearl’s appetite for murder ran deep years before a group of adult filmmakers stumbled onto her land.

No one, or thing is safe!

Ti West spoke more about what fans can expect in Pearl, saying:

“What I can tell you about Pearl, because we’ve already made it and it’s done, is it is very much a story about Pearl. So you will learn more about her. It is stylistically very different from X. You do not need one without the other, but they enrich each other in a specific way. In the way that X is affected, let’s say by 1970s horror independent filmmaking and Americana cinema, Pearl is influenced by a very different era of filmmaking. If we do the third one, it will be affected by a different type of cinema.”

Starring alongside Mia Goth are David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro.

Ti West directs.

Pearl will hit cinemas on September 16th, 2022.
