Transformers the Movie introduced Hot Rod, a “young” Autobot who was destined to get Optimus Prime killed and then take his place. In this Versus Review, we put the Studio Series 86 Hot Rod vs a super high quality Knock Off of the MP-28 Hot Rodimus (since the Masterpiece edition cost $30, we’re figuring it’s the knock off even though the packaging says Takara Tomy). Captain Kyle will go through the good, the bad and the odd with these two and you decide which one is better.
Hot Rod was an Autobot that many blame for the death of Optimus Prime, but he’s still a fan favorite. He’s gone through many different versions, from the original G1 with very limited articulation to a Micromaster that came with Star Convoy to the Classics version and even a Headmaster in Titans Return.
These two versions are great representations of the character. The MP28 Hot Rodimus is likely a high-quality knockoff, but still an incredible toy. The Studio Series 86 Hot Rod has many of the same features and is a highly popular toy.
