Fandom News Roundup 1/23 – 1/29/21

Hey, Fandom Fans! It’s the last Friday in January, which means we made it through one month in 2021. Give yourselves a pat on the back! While the rest of the world is trying to figure out why GameStop is at the top of the stock market, we at Fandom Spotlite kept our eyes out for fandom news. This week wasn’t too action-packed, but there are still plenty of noteworthy stories to share with you. So, sit down in a comfy chair and enjoy this week’s top stories.

Mr. Sandman, Bring me a Dream…Cast.


The highly anticipated Netflix series Sandman, based on the works of Neil Gaiman, finally announces some of the cast. The cast includes Tom Sturridge, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar. We also get a small Game of Thrones Reunion- Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) and Gwendoline Christie ( Brienne of Tarth) are also part of the cast.

Cookie Monster is Found Outside of Sesame Street.

Imagine you’re a rock collector, just looking for geodes in Brazil when you stumble across a rock with a monster inside. Though it may seem like something straight out of a horror film, it’s actually very sweet. California mineral collector Mike Bowers found an agate that when cracked open revealed the face of Cookie Monster! He posted the photo on Facebook and it went viral. Looks like even nature loves the fuzzy blue monster.

A New Raya and the Last Dragon Trailer Premiers

Disney has released its latest trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon. The trailer also announces the release date of the film, March 5, 2021. The Last Dragon will be released in theaters and on Disney+ via their Premier Access. Disney’s Mulan was also released using Premier Access, which cost about $30. In addition to the release date, the trailer featured some of the voice cast. This came with some criticism as while the story is of Southeast Asian origins, it features many actors who are not. Disney has not yet released a statement addressing fans’ concerns.

The Tomb Raider Goes Green.

Misha Green will be making a feature film debut with the Tomb Raider sequel. Green, the showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, has been tasked with writing and directing the action film. Alicia Vikander will be returning to play Lara Croft. We are excited to see how Green’s unique vision will play with the video game icon.

Hostess and Ghostbusters team up again to bring a new collaboration to life. To celebrate the upcoming release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Hostess is releasing a limited-edition Twinkie! This special Twinkie will be filled with a blue cream filling that has a fruity flavor. Previously, Hostess released a Keylime Slime Twinkie, with green filling that tasted like key lime pie. The limited-edition Twinkies will be available in Walmart and other food retailers.

Godzilla vs King Kong vs Gojira?

If you were already excited to see the big dinosaur fight the big gorilla, then you will be even more excited to see another competitor enter the ring. The latest trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong reveals the villain of the film, which is none other than Gojira. No, we don’t mean the French Heavy Metal band of the same name. Fans of the Godzilla franchise will know Gojira as Godzilla’s older brother, and he’s not here to be his little brother’s tag team partner. Godzilla vs Kong will be available on HBO Max on March 26, 2021.

HBO already has a Game of Thrones spin-off in production- House of The Dragon. But it appears they aren’t done with the franchise yet. It looks like HBO is working on an animated GOT series. The animated series will stay true to the adult nature of the previous show and the books.

Legends Pass On

This week, three legends passed away.  Legendary actress Cloris Leachman died on January 27, 2021. She was 97 years old. Fandom fans may know her for her recent role as Zorya Vechernyaya in American Gods.

American television and radio host Larry King passed away on January 23, 2021. The award-winning host was 87 years old. It is recorded that King hosted over 50, 000 interviews.

Gene Roddenberry’s former assistant Richard Arnold passed away on January 26, 2021. Arnold was 66 years old when he died. Richard Arnold was a consultant and archivist for Star Trek.
