6 New Webtoon Adaptations Announced for 2023

Webtoons continue to increase in popularity as they trend worldwide. With new stories being published weekly it’s no surprise there are more adaptations being released.  As more webtoon snag adaptation deals, we can look forward to more shows and movies hitting the screens this year. Here is the latest roundup of some webtoons set for their adaptations to be released sometime in 2023.

Morning Comes to Psychiatric Wards Too

Based on the webtoon called Jungshinbyungdongedo Achimeun Wayo by Lee Ra-Ha, the story is based on the author’s experience when working as a nurse in the psychiatric ward of a hospital. The drama will follow Jung Da-Eun, who is transferred from neuropsychiatry to the internal medicine department. She tries her best to deal with the patients and she grows as a nurse with the help of Chief Nurse Song Hyo-Jin. A release date for Morning Comes to Psychiatric Wards Too has not been released yet but is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2023. This webtoon adaptation will star Park Bo-Young (Doom At Your Service), Yeon Woo-Jin (Thirty Nine), Jang Dong-Yoon (Joseon Exorcist), and Lee Jung-Eun (Beyond The Memory).

Connect

Are you looking for a suspense-filled drama? If so, you may want to add Connect to your watch list. This drama adaptation is based on a thriller webtoon by author Shin Dae-Sun. The webtoon is about the story of a man tracking down a serial killer who gouged out his right eye. Originally published in 2019-2020 it gained popularity on Naver Webtoon but no official English version released yet. Connect will be released in 2023 on Disney+. Jung Hae-In (Snowdrop) has been cast as the main character Ha Dong-Su. Go Kyung-Pyo (My Roommate Is a Gumiho) will play the role of Oh Jin-Seok and Kim Hye-Jun (Kingdom) has been cast as Lee Lee-Rang.

Pontifex Lembary

Kim Min-Kyu (Business Proposal) has been cast in the drama series Pontifex Lembrary based on the webtoon called Sungseureowoon Idol by Shin Hwa-Jin. This is a drama that fans of the fantasy genre will want to add to their watch list. Kim Min-Kyu plays the character Pontifex Lembrary who has divine power. He ends up in a fight against a devil and by accident transfers into the body of an unpopular idol group member named Woo Yeon-Woo. The group suddenly gains popularity because of Woo Yeon-Woo, who is now possessed by Pontifex Lembrary. This drama adaptation is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2023.

New Generation War: Reawakened Man

Set to start filming in 2023 in South Korea, this movie adaptation is based on the webtoon named Buwhalnam by Chae Yong-Taek & Kim Jae-Han. This film is directed by Baek Jong-Yeol after directing who’s first directing gig was The Beauty Inside, a romantic fantasy film that won the award for Best New Director at the 52nd Daejong Film Awards. This film will star Koo Gyo-Hwan (D.P., Peninsula) as the character of a young who reawakens 3 days after being killed. He uses this newfound ability to now fight against evil and help those in need.

Murder DIEary

Another upcoming thriller for fans of suspenseful drama series is Murder DIEary. This webtoon adaptation based on the webtoon Salinja O Nangam by Ggomabi & Nomabi will stream on Netflix sometime in 2023. Choi Woo-Sik (Our Beloved Summer), Son Suk-Ku (My Liberation Notes), & Lee Hee-Jun (Until the Morning Comes) have been cast in leading roles for this Netflix drama series. Choi plays the character, Lee Tang, a college student-turned-killer. He learns his victims had been criminals themselves and this leads him on a quest to eliminate evildoers for good. Son who plays Gang Nan-gam is a police detective and Hee-Jun acts as Song Chon, a former detective, and they start to investigate the murders in the area.

Death’s Game

You’ll want to catch up on this webtoon on WEBTOON before its adaptation is released. Death’s Game was originally created by writers Lee Won-Shik and Gulchan back in 2019. The story follows the life of the main character Choi Yi-Jae who has fallen down on his luck. He’s unemployed, his ex-girlfriend has moved on to a relationship, and he lost all his life savings in a bitcoin scam. He decides to take matters into his own hands but instead, he must experience death repeatedly through thirteen other lives. If he can find a way to survive he gets to live out their life, but what happens when the lives run out? Kang Ha-Neul (When the Camellia Blooms) has been cast as the lead in the drama series.
