Golden Globe and Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock makes her return to the screen for the first time in three years in Netflix’s upcoming drama The Unforgivable.
The film marks the actress’s first feature release since her previous collaboration with the streaming giant on the hit horror release Bird Box.
Bullock plays the title role of Ruth Slater, a woman who has been released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime. Upon her release, she re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. Facing severe judgment from the place she once called home, her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister she was forced to leave behind.
The film is based on the British mini-series Unforgiven, which aired on ITV in the UK back in 2009, and starred Suranne Jones as the same title character. In this version, Slater had been convicted for the murder of two police officers and the story followed her release sixteen years later.
How much the Netflix adaptation will differ is unknown, but we do know it has shifted the location from its original setting of Yorkshire, England.
The Unforgivable was originally announced back in 2010, with producer Graham King wanting Angelina Jolie to play the title role, but the actress never signed onto the project, leaving it in limbo for years. After numerous writer and director changes, the film finally entered production in 2019.
The film boasts an impressive cast list that also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and Viola Davis.
The Unforgivable is set for release in select cinemas on November 24th and on Netflix on December 10th.
