Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is A Frightfully Good Time – Game Review

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is a fun, multiplayer game perfect for all skill levels. Four proton-pack-wielding Ghostbusters attempt to catch a Ghost haunting unique locations in asymmetrical multiplayer battles (online multiplayer or offline solo). As players progress, they will unlock cosmetics and upgrades for both Ghostbusters and Ghosts to evolve their gameplay experiences. The look and feel will deliver to fans an immersive experience, allowing them to play out their Ghostbusting fantasies. Whether hunting or haunting, the game is easy to learn and fun to master!

Let’s take a look at the trailer!

Now that we have given you the basics, let’s get into some details.

The art style has a cartoonish art style, similar to another video game Back 4 Blood. When the intro starts you are hit with nostalgia seeing Winston walk into the Ghostbusters headquarters. As the headquarters change around him, old fans might feel like they are about to get the Ghostbusters they have been looking for for so long. I feel like the intro was perfect; the reverence of the old combined with a sense of progress.

The game controls are easy to get used to and playing as a Ghostbuster is pretty fun. As a Ghostbusters you have classic weapons to use at your disposal like the Proton Pack, PKE Meter, Ghost Traps, and Grappling Hooks.  The 4v1 hunt or haunt action-packed asymmetrical multiplayer allows a group of up to five to play together: four Ghostbusters versus one Ghost.  You don’t have to worry about having enough team members, the AI will fill the spot of any missing members during matchmaking so you can get into action immediately.

While playing as a Ghostbusters is a bit organized playing as a ghost is chaotic but in the best possible way. The world opens up, and sliming up your enemies brings so much more joy than expected. You even have the ability to possess inanimate objects. You can go from a ghost to a chair to a curtain and a lot more.  Some of your other ghostly abilities include Movement – Which affects your traversal speed, Ectoplasm – Which determines the size of the resource pool used for ability usage, Haunting – Which modifies the rate at which a location becomes haunted, and Escaping – Which adjusts the Ghost’s ability to escape beams and traps.

Players have the ability to play as beloved favorites Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore or create their own customizable character! The maps also feature classic locations from the film franchise like the lodge, the museum, a prison, a cruise ship, and a brewery.

The music in Spirits Unleashed is excellent. The studio was able to get the original Ray Parker Jr. theme song for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. There are other great tunes and referential sound effects that honor the spirit of the original film and it is a real treat when you hear them. So, keep an ear out!

I give Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed an A!

I highly recommend this game. It is easy to play, casual gamers will have no problems learning the control. The 4v1 will provide avid gamers with a new challenge to an oversaturated genre. The game’s goofy feeling provides smiles from ear to ear. Ghostbusters fans will enjoy the meticulous attention paid to the details. Also, it is just way too much fun playing as Slimer.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is currently available for PC on Epic Games Store, PlayStation®5|4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is rated E (for Everyone).  Spirits Unleased retails for  $39.99 while the physical Collector’s Edition goes for $69.99.
