Blumhouse’s The Exorcist Remake – “We’re already thinking about a trilogy”

Blumhouse productions have become one of the leading names in the horror genre over the past twenty years, spawning the release of many exciting solo projects as well as helming franchises like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, and the new Halloween reboot.

Work on the Halloween trilogy will come to a bloody conclusion this October with the release of Halloween Ends, but what lies ahead for the company?

While there are many exciting projects in the works, a reboot of another popular franchise is set to take center stage, with Blumhouse already working on a new Exorcist movie.

The companies founder Jason Blum has spoken more about the upcoming project, sharing his hope for the film and a possible trilogy:

“I’m really excited about The Exorcist. The first person I approached when we picked up the film was David Gordon Green. I thought what David did with Halloween was great and I think he really found a great balance of respecting the original intellectual property, but also bringing something new to it. So it didn’t feel like a retread. So I was really happy when he wanted to do The Exorcist and we’re starting production really soon. We’re already setting up a framework and thinking about a trilogy. We also have a great cast.”

Whether the film will live up to its predecessor is yet unknown, but the pressure will be on to deliver. Blum has previously spoken about why he wanted to make a new Exorcist movie, saying:

“I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David [Gordon Green] did that with Halloween and I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also.”

Details about the project remain limited but the film will see Chris MacNeil reprise her role from the first film. The Handmaid’s Tale star Ann Dowd will also star alongside Leslie Odom Jr.

A brief synopsis reads:

Sequel to the 1973 film about a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, forcing her mother to seek the help of two priests to save her.
