Webtoons are increasingly becoming popular as it trends worldwide. With new stories being released weekly and more adaptations are being released. Here is a roundup of some webcomics to check out before their adaptation hits the screen.

The Sound of Magic

The Sound of Magic is an upcoming Netflix Original psychological K-Drama series written by Kim Min Jeong, and directed by Kim Seong-Yoon. It is based on the webtoon Annarasumanara by Ha Il-Kwon. The drama follows Yoon Ah Yi who supports herself and her younger sister. She wishes to grow so that she can have a stable job, and when she reveals her dream to the magician Lee Eul, her life is changed forever. This drama is still in production and there is no release date yet. Confirmed actors include Ji Chang Wook, Choi Sung Eun, Hwang In Yeop, and Nam Da Reum.

For comedy-drama TV viewers should put Internal Medicine Doctor Park on your watch list. This drama is based on the webtoon of the same name that tells the narrative of a novice doctor. Park dreams of becoming a true doctor but struggles between medicine and tactics in his empty office. This webtoon landed the 1st spot on Daum Webtoon League and garnered more than 4 million views on Naver Webtoon Best Challenge. Lee Seo Jin is set to play Doctor Park and notable actress Ra Mi Ran, known for her comic acting, will play the role of Doctor Park’s wife.

Angry Little Girls

Fans of Angry Little Girls comics will get excited as Gamechanger Films has plans to adapt Lee’s cult classic comic strip of the same name into a television series and a number of holiday movies. Angry Little Girls was launched by Lela Lee in 2000 and is based on Lee’s animated series, Angry Little Asian Girl. The series is about 6-year-old Kim, an angry Korean American girl, and the comics challenge gender and racial stereotypes throughout its stories. Gamechanger also plans to expand the brand’s merchandise.

Yumi’s Cells

Yumi's Cells Webtoon Launches Mobile Game | CBR

Yumi’s Cells TV adaptation is Kim Go Eun’s comeback to the small screen starring along with Goo Woong, Lee Yoo Bi, Park Ji Hyun, SHINee’s Minho, and GOT7’s Jinyoung. In this webtoon, Kim Yumi is an ordinary office worker in her 30s who lives in a world where every human being has a cell for just about everything. This series will be directed by Sang Yeob, who is known for the dramas Familiar Wife and Shopping King Louie. Yumi’s Cells is scheduled to premiere in September with multiple seasons that have 14 episodes each.

Hellbound

Starring Yoo Ah-in, Park Jung-min, Kim Hyun-joo, and Won Jin-ah, Hellbound is a webtoon adaptation that is set to release on Netflix. This fantasy story takes place in a world where creatures by a supernatural phenomenon suddenly appear and begin dragging people on earth to hell. The series by Choi Kyu-sok will have its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film making it the first Korean drama to view at the festival. This series is directed by Yeon Sang-ho who is noted for being at the helm of popular films, Train to Busan and Peninsula. The series will have 6 episodes total and is sure to give viewers thrills and chills.

Let’s Play

Hit RomCom Webtoon 'Let's Play' Is Getting A TV Adaptation

Let’s Play, a notable comic series on the Line Webtoon app, is getting a TV adaptation. The romantic comedy series by Leeanne M. Krecic got a development deal from Allnighter to produce a live-action television series. Let’s Play follows the personal and professional adventures of Sam, a 20-something female video game developer and the series gives deep insight as well as a satirical view of the male-dominated gaming industry. No word yet on when the series will be completed or who will be playing the main cast of characters.

Delivery Knight

Delivery Knight focuses on the dystopian future where pollution becomes so severe that the only way to survive is to have everything delivered at the doorstep. This drama is set to be released on Netflix, but no release date is set currently. Kim Woo Bin is currently in talks to play the lead character of the delivery knight in the drama. It is rumored that Esom, who has starred in dramas such as Taxi Driver has been offered a role in the show, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Accidental Country Diary

K-pop enthusiasts fans might want to check out Accidental Country Diary which stars Girls’ Generation’s member Choi Soo-young. This drama is the story of a veterinarian who is thrown into a rural village and ends up meeting a police officer there. She soon adjusts to country life and gradually falls in love. Soo-young will be acting alongside Jang Geun Suk who will play police officer Ahn Ja-young. The drama is set to be aired on Kakao TV. Further details are to be announced.
